Tambuwal, Amaechi under police fire

Thousands of All Progressives Congress (APC) members, led by the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie- Oyegun and Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi yesterday stormed the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters,
Abuja, to protest the withdrawal of the security aides of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal.
The speaker recently defected from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The protesters, carrying placards of different inscriptions, disrupted activities at the Force Headquarters as they prevented policemen, visitors and vehicles from gaining access to the premises.
Singing various anti-police songs, the protesters caused serious traffic jam along the Shehu Shagari Way, Asokoro, where the Force Headquarters is located before they departed.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Suleiman Abba, however, described Amaechi's action in barricading the entrance to the Force Headquarters as a deliberate attempt to provoke the police.
He warned aggrieved politicians and their supporters to seek redress in the court rather than disturbing the peace of law-abiding citizens.
Abba equally advised politicians to take their campaign to the doorsteps of the electorate and not to disrupt activities in government offices.
The police boss said even though the action of the governor was to provoke the police to an open confrontation, the latter disappointed the former and his followers by exhibiting restraint.
Abba, in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CP Emmanuel Ojukwu, said: "The incident, though provocative and uncivilised, ended without any confrontation as the police exhibited maximum restraint in the face of ceaseless provocation by these leaders and their motley crowd."

DAVID MARK SHUTS DOWN NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

The National Assembly has been shut down after all hell broke loose at the premises following the decision by policemen and other security operatives to stop the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, from gaining access.
The House of Representatives reconvened to deliberate on the request by President Goodluck Jonathan to extend the State of Emergency in the three north east states ravaged by Boko Haram.
Though the Speaker eventually gained entrance into the complex, other lawmakers had to scale a fence to get into the complex.
Thursday’s resumption was to deliberate on a single agenda, which is “Consideration of Mr.President’s request for extension of the existing State of Emergency”, according to an earlier statement by the Speaker.
However, there was an alleged attempt to bar the Speaker’s entrance, as his media adviser tweeted,  via @imamdimam, that security operatives had dispensed tear gas as well.
Meanwhile, the Senate President, David Mark has asked that the National Assembly be shut down till next week Tuesday.

House Rejects Jonathan’s Request For Emergency Extension

An executive session of the House of Representatives members have met and thrown out the emergency extension request from the Nigerian President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan.
This decision was taken at a closed door meeting, which held after the Senate President, David Mark, pronounced National Assembly shut until Tuesday.
Briefing newsmen later, the House Spokesman, Zakari Mohammed advised President Jonathan to invoice section 81 of the 1999 Constitution and order massive deployment of troops rather than wait for extension of emergency.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, had directed the House to reconvene after it adjourned sitting of its plenary on 28th of October to 3rd December 2014 to allow members of the House carry out pre – budget oversight activities in preparation for the 2015 budget and also to meet the political calendar of all the political parties.
The Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, in a statement said he “received a communication from the President, Commander-in- Chief of the Armed Forces, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR, requesting for the extension of the existing State of Emergency in Adamawa , Borno and Yobe States by the House of Representatives.
“Pursuant to the powers conferred on me by Section 305 ( 2 ) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, which requires me to “forthwith convene or arrange a meeting of the House” and in order to treat the extension before the expiration of the current State of Emergency in accordance with Section 305 (6) (c) of the Constitution, I hereby reconvene the House of Representatives, currently on Recess.”

Tambuwal urged to resign over Reps commotion

Abuja - Mike Ozekhome, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), on Thursday called on Aminu Tambuwal, Speaker, House of Representatives, to resign for peace to reign in the legislature.
Ozekhome, a constitutional lawyer, said this in an interview while reacting to the lawmakers’ fracas which culminated in Thursday’s shut down of the national Assembly.
Senate President David Mark on Thursday announced the suspension of National Assembly plenaries until Tuesday, following the reconvening of House of Representatives.
The lower chamber reconvened on Thursday to discuss President Goodluck Jonathan's request for the extension of the State of Emergency in the three North-East states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.
Security operatives barricaded the entrance in an attempt to prevent Tambuwal access to the hallowed chamber, leading to a commotion and the fearing of tear gas.
Ozekhome said that the undercurrent of the entire episode was that some lawmakers must have felt that the reconvening of the House would lead to Tambuwal’s impeachment by his opponents.
This, he said, could have informed their desperate attempt to get to the chambers by climbing the National Assembly gate and fence when it was closed against them to forestall the impending fracas.
"My advice is that Tambuwal should honourably and voluntarily resign as Speaker of the House of Representatives in order for peace to reign in the National Assembly.
"Having defected from the political party on which platform he got to the National Assembly and became the Speaker, he should stop his present grandstanding because he cannot have his cake and eat it.
"Whether the courts have declared his seat vacant or not, whether he has been impeached or not, and whether it is constitutional for him to do so or not, he owes a moral obligation to resign now.
Ozekhome said that the Senate President did the right thing by suspending plenary till Tuesday next week so that the tension would calm down.
"The Senate President, by virtue of Section 53 (2) of the Nigerian Constitution, is the Chairman of the National Assembly and so is empowered to regulate the legislature which is bicameral.’’
He condemned the action of lawmakers who climbed the fence to get into the premises of the National Assembly complex.
The senior advocate said that what those lawmakers did smacked of `indecency, indecorum and, above all, very shameful in the eyes of those who elected them and the international community.
